Job Description
The Retail Gemologist will be responsible for evaluating, grading, and authenticating diamonds and gemstones, supporting the sales team with technical expertise, and ensuring the highest standards of product quality in the showroom. This role plays a crucial part in enhancing customer trust and contributing to sales conversions.
Responsibilities
1. Diamond & Gemstone Grading
Grade diamonds and gemstones based on the 4Cs—Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat weight.
Verify authenticity, hallmarks, certifications (GIA/IGI), and overall quality of stones.
Conduct detailed QC checks for diamond & gemstone–studded jewellery before it is displayed or sold.
Identify any inclusions, defects, or irregularities in stones or settings.
2. Customer Assistance
Assist the sales team by providing expert technical insights during customer discussions.
Explain diamond/gemstone quality, certification details, pricing factors, and product specifications in simple terms.
Build customer confidence by offering transparent and knowledgeable guidance.
Support in closing high-value sales by offering clarity on product authenticity and value.
3. Inventory & Documentation
Maintain grading reports, QC checklists, certification records, and stone logs.
Assist in stock audits, tagging, SKU verification, and inward/outward documentation.
Highlight discrepancies in stone weight, quality, setting, or finishing to management.
Ensure accurate record-keeping for compliance and inventory control.
4. Store Operations
Ensure secure handling, storage, and care of all diamond jewellery and loose stones.
Support visual merchandising for the diamond and precious stone counters.
Coordinate with store managers and backend teams for QC approvals, product receipt, and stock updates.
Maintain showroom standards for product placement, cleanliness, and presentation.
Requirements
2–6 years of experience in jewellery retail, gemology, or grading lab environment.
Experience in diamond grading, gemstone assessment, and retail QC preferred.
Technical Skills
Strong knowledge of diamonds (solitaires & melee), gemstones, and 4C grading.
Ability to identify treatments, enhancements, and synthetic stones.
Proficiency in using gemological tools like loupe, microscope, color master stones, gauges, etc.
Knowledge of jewellery QC processes and certification standards.
Soft Skills
Excellent communication and customer-handling skills.
High attention to detail, accuracy, and integrity.
Ability to work closely with sales teams and support high-pressure retail environments.
Strong documentation and reporting skills.
