Put two good-quality diamonds in front of a first-time buyer and ask them to identify which one was mined and which one was grown in a laboratory. Most people won’t be able to do it just by looking.
Both can sparkle in the same way. Both are made of carbon. Both can be graded for cut, colour, clarity and carat. Both can be set into the same engagement ring.
Then the price tag tells a different story.
This is where the conversation around lab-grown diamonds vs natural diamonds becomes interesting. The difference isn’t simply about whether one is “real” and the other isn’t. It is about origin, rarity, price and what the buyer actually values.
1. The biggest difference is where the diamond comes from
Natural diamonds formed deep inside the Earth under extreme heat and pressure. Some took millions or even billions of years to form before geological activity brought them closer to the Earth’s surface.
Lab-grown diamonds are produced in controlled environments. The two main methods are HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) and CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition). Both processes grow actual diamond crystals, but they recreate the conditions needed for diamond formation in a much shorter timeframe. GIA explains that CVD diamonds can be grown over a period of weeks, depending on the process and size of the stone.
So if a customer asks, “Is a lab-grown diamond a real diamond?” the simple answer is yes.
It isn’t the same as cubic zirconia or another diamond simulant. A lab-grown diamond has essentially the same chemical composition and crystal structure as a natural diamond.
The story behind the stone is different.
2. Can you actually see the difference?
This is probably the question customers ask most often.
The short answer is not reliably with the naked eye.
A well-cut natural diamond and a well-cut lab-grown diamond can look remarkably similar. Even a person familiar with jewellery cannot simply look at two stones and confidently identify their origin every time.
GIA points out that traditional gemological observations and standard diamond detectors are not sufficient for reliable identification. Laboratories use specialised equipment to look for growth characteristics and other indicators that reveal whether a diamond is natural or laboratory-grown.
This is why certification and disclosure matter.
If you’re buying a diamond, don’t rely on someone saying, “I can tell just by looking at it.” Ask for the report and check what it actually says.
3. Why is a lab-grown diamond usually cheaper?
This is where the difference becomes very noticeable for buyers.
Lab-grown diamonds generally sell for considerably less than comparable natural diamonds. The exact price difference isn’t fixed. It changes with market conditions and depends on carat weight, cut, colour, clarity, shape and certification.
Imagine two customers with a ₹2 lakh budget.
One might prefer to spend that money on a smaller natural diamond because the natural origin and rarity matter to them. Another might prefer a larger lab-grown stone with higher colour or clarity because getting more size for the same budget matters more.
Neither buyer is making the wrong choice.
They are paying for different things.
That is also why jewellery salespeople need to understand the difference instead of simply telling customers that one is “better.” The better conversation starts with what the customer actually wants.
4. Don’t forget the 4Cs
The natural-versus-lab-grown debate can sometimes overshadow the basics of buying a diamond.
Cut, colour, clarity and carat still matter.
A one-carat diamond isn’t automatically better than a 0.8-carat diamond. A higher clarity grade doesn’t always mean the stone will look dramatically different to the naked eye. And cut has a major effect on how a diamond handles light.
This is something first-time buyers often discover only after visiting a few jewellery stores.
They walk in asking for a “one-carat diamond” and leave realising that there are dozens of other decisions involved.
The same 4Cs framework can be used when evaluating lab-grown diamonds. IGI, for example, grades lab-grown diamonds for the same core quality characteristics while separately identifying their laboratory-grown origin.

5. Are lab-grown diamonds less durable?
No.
Both natural and lab-grown diamonds are diamond and have a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale.
For an engagement ring or everyday jewellery, the more practical concerns are the cut, setting, workmanship and how the jewellery is cared for.
So durability isn’t a strong reason to reject a lab-grown diamond.
The real decision is about origin, price and personal preference.
6. The certificate is more important than many buyers realise
Here’s a situation that happens often.
A customer knows the budget, carat weight and colour they want. They compare two stones and focus almost entirely on the price.
But they haven’t looked carefully at the report.
That report can tell them something the showroom lighting cannot.

7. Why some people still prefer natural diamonds

If lab-grown diamonds offer similar physical properties at a lower price, why would anyone still pay more for a natural diamond?
Because people don’t always buy jewelry based on specifications alone.
For some buyers, the fact that their diamond formed naturally inside the Earth is part of its emotional value. Rarity, tradition and the history attached to natural diamonds can matter just as much as size or price.
It is similar to buying a vintage watch instead of a modern watch that keeps time just as well.
The practical function may overlap.
The story doesn’t.
Other buyers simply don’t place much value on origin. They would rather use their budget for a bigger stone, a better setting or another part of the wedding.
That is why the natural-versus-lab-grown debate isn’t going away anytime soon.
8. What this means for jewelry professionals
For the jewelry industry, this isn’t just a product conversation.
It is changing the kind of questions customers ask.
A customer who once asked, “How many carats is this?” may now ask whether the stone is CVD or HPHT, which laboratory issued the report, why two similar diamonds have different prices and how the stone’s origin affects its value.
That puts more pressure on sales professionals to understand the product properly.
A salesperson doesn’t need to push the customer towards natural or lab-grown. The job is to explain the difference clearly, understand the customer’s priorities and help them make an informed decision.
Product knowledge is becoming part of the sales experience.
And that is a useful lesson for anyone building a career in jewelry retail.
So, which diamond should you choose?
There isn’t one correct answer.
If natural origin, rarity and tradition matter to you, a natural diamond may feel worth the premium. If your priority is getting more size or higher specifications within a fixed budget, a lab-grown diamond may make more sense.
The important thing is knowing what you’re paying for.
A lab-grown diamond is not a fake diamond. A natural diamond is not automatically a better-looking diamond. And a higher price doesn’t tell you everything about how a stone will look on someone’s hand.
The smartest buyer isn’t necessarily the one who chooses natural or lab-grown. It’s the one who understands the difference before spending the money.
